Personality

Positive = [Generous] [Empathetic] [Studious] [Tolerant]

Generous
Everything he has he gives back to the church or orphanage. He lives a meager, sometimes hungry life in order to provide for others. When money or food is especially sparse, he will take on laborious work around the city to keep generating income. He tends to his garden year round and donates the entire crop to the orphanage.

Empathetic
Because he began his life in poverty, he knows what it’s like to feel hunger and desperation. He will never turn anyone away from his church, regardless of their wealth, background, or innocence. He would even house a criminal if the criminal claimed sanctuary.

Studious
Nothing excites Samuel quite as much as reading. He soaks up information like a sponge, and seeks out new books and teachers with an insatiable hunger. Books are the only things he will buy for himself, and he values his library more than anything.

Tolerant
He doesn’t discriminate against other religions or backgrounds. In fact, he draws inspiration from other beliefs, not only Christianity. One of his hobbies is discussing the ins and outs of other religions—these discussions often start out as challenging arguments.

Neutral = [Curious]

Curious
In addition to his reading, he will investigate anything that seems unusual or interesting to him, even if it gets him into trouble. Some main vices to his curiosity are plants, bugs, star patterns, and intriguing smells (such as baking bread or tanning leather).

Negative = [Unforgiving] [Lustful/Desirous] [Has Arsonphobia]

Unforgiving
He often refuses to acknowledge this trait, and keeps it buried most of the time. He finds it difficult to forgive the cats who wronged him in his past, such as the children and orphanage attendants who were cruel to him. He will forgive anyone to their face, but will usually have trouble truly letting go of his grudges.

Lustful/Desirous
This is another trait that he keeps hidden. Deep down, he looks at women with just as much depravity as any other man. He also feels a lot of guilty envy when he sees nobles with fine clothes and luxurious estates. There’s a side of him that wants the finer things in life, but he doesn’t ever feel comfortable facing that side.

Has Arsonphobia
His intense fear of fire used to send him into fits of screaming, due to suppressed memories from his early childhood related to a traumatic fire. He has gotten the worst of his phobia under control, but open flames still make him extremely nervous.

History

Childhood: Samuel was found wandering the streets as an orphan at a very young age. He didn’t know where his family was, where he came from, or even his name. He was taken to a shoddy orphanage with little hope for adoption, where the children were cruel and the attendants were neglectful. The only vague memory of his previous life surfaced when Sam was asked to help in the kitchens. While baking bread, he caught sight of the oven’s flickering fires, and immediately recalled the sound of screams, the smell of smoke, and the sense of terror. The cooks found him screaming and hiding as far from the fires as possible, but as soon as he snapped out of his state of fear, the memories were gone.

After his first episode, the older children at the orphanage did their best to make his life a living hell. They would chase him with candles and torches, laughing whenever he’d fall into fits of screaming. Samuel began to feel more and more afraid of the buried memories. He tried running away from the orphanage, wanting to get away from the ones who would use his phobia against him. His escape eventually took him to a church, and he was quickly drawn in by the beautiful chanting and stain-glass windows. He wandered inside, and on a stand by the entrance was something the orphanage had never been able to afford—a book. It was an ancient religious tome with stunning calligraphy, dusty pages, and worn leather binding.

An old priest caught him trying to make out the writing. The priest was strict and ornery, scolding Samuel for touching the book with his dirty paws. Despite this, the young cat continued to return to the church, his curiosity spurring him on. The priest continued to act displeased at Sam’s visits, yet he slowly and begrudgingly instructed the orphan on how to read. Once the child was able to decipher the writings on his own, the old priest extended an offer of official apprenticeship. It wasn’t quite as good as adoption, but Sam was willing to do anything to break away from the orphanage.

Young Adulthood: Sam went through his religious schooling alongside a few other young apprentices, but he quickly began to shine as the fastest learner among them. He had an insatiable craving for knowledge, especially when it came to religious history. He found his passion in studying faiths from all over the world—he built his beliefs around teachings from Greek mythology, Nordic tales, Christianity, and more. He also developed an interest in botany, and started a garden on church grounds that would serve to feed the poor.

Near the end of his education, the priest who had taken him under his wing passed away. Samuel was more than qualified to take charge of the church he left behind, and made it his mission to make the lives of orphans better through education. He began to offer free classes at the church to teach orphans to read, write, and learn about other religions.

Bastian was becoming frustrated. Christian had an "order," but most of the city's shifters considered themselves to be vigilantes. There was no real organization--he and his elders were only held in higher regard due to their powers. They weren't elected or born into their positions. As far as he knew, the other shifters didn't even acknowlege their authority. He looked away from the exorcist and fell back to lean against the wall, raising a hand to rub his temples. "I don't even know where to begin with laying down the law," he sighed. "My shifters call themselves 'loners,' they don't want to listen to me or my elders." He gestured to himself and rolled his eyes. "And I'm not exactly the most imposing of men. They don't fear me, don't respect me."
