It had been mid-morning when the riders had set out with their temporary charges, Spud and Tate, but by this point the sunlight had turned gold and thick with afternoon.  The forest surrounding them was still and dark, with only a few cracks in the canopy betraying the time of day.  The ground was spongy with mud and fallen leaves.  The tokotas' footfalls were absorbed in the quiet woods.  Everything was muffled, cool, and all too silent.

Peggy's stomach brashly broke the stillness with a drawn out growl.  She frowned miserably and bent over her mount, Sputnik.  "Uh, how much longer did you say?" she asked the man ahead of her.

Nik shrugged casually, twisting a bit on Tate's back to look at his companion.  "Can't be much longer.  Like I said, I know my routes better than I know my own name."

"That's...not possible?"

"Psh."  Nik snorted at her as he pulled a pack of cigarettes from his pocket.  "This is a good learning experience for you.  It's nice to get out and explore every now and then.  It's healthy."

The cold and her hunger were making Peggy grumpy.  She frowned at the man and grumbled, "So you're saying we're lost."

"No, no, no," he replied, waving his hand dismissively.  "No.  Maybe.  Yeah maybe, actually."

The woman threw up her hands in exasperation.  "Perfect!  You agreed to babysit these two mop-heads and end up getting us all sorts of lost in the middle of nowhere."  She leaned down to pet Spud's ears.  "No offense, buddy."  The yeti's head tossed back to flash her a carefree grin.  "But seriously, why couldn't we take Cowboy or Carnelian along?  They know the way home blindfolded."

"Cowboy was in a mood, and there's no way I'm taking Carny on one of my trips, I'll leave that spitfire to you."

"Don't call her Carny, dude, where did that even come from?"

"Because carnival workers are terrifying and so is she," Nik replied with a grouchy scowl.

Peggy sighed.  "Alright, this is stupid.  How're we getting home?"

Without replying, the man slid from his tokota and started wandering toward the trees, the lit cigarette hanging loosely from his smile.  She watched him walk for a moment, then sighed and asked, "Where are you going now?"

"Exploring!"  Nik pressed on cheerfully, not waiting for Peggy to follow.  "It kind of bugs me I haven't seen this particular forest before, makes sense for me to get familiar."

The woman knew there was no arguing with her employer once he'd decided to goof off, so after a drastic eye-roll, she gave Sputnik a gentle kick and followed the man into the forest, with Tate trailing close by.  She frowned as Nik sauntered aimlessly between the trees, looking from side to side while puffing on his cigarette.  He'd occasionally stoop down to stare at a seemingly empty patch of dirt on the ground, or suddenly look intently up at the leaves like a cat who'd spotted a bird.  As he was carefully pondering a fallen log, Peggy piped up and quipped, "There is absolutely nothing to look at, so can we get going please?"

"Sure there is!  I mean, look right here, look what we've got here.  A tree.  And over there we have a...another tree."  Nik was quiet for a moment, then suddenly popped up and clapped his hands together.  "Alright!  I'm bored as hell.  How do we get out of here?"

"You're the one who wandered off in the first place, genius."  Peggy was suddenly distracted by a shadow of movement that flashed from deep within the trees.  Her long ears swiveled and perked.  She sat up straight on Spud's back and stared out into the shade.  She placed a cautious hand on the tokota's shoulder and said, "You see that, bud?"  The yeti let out a suspicious whine as he followed her gaze.  Even Tate was a bit more nervous, his head lowering while Nik clambered back into his saddle.

"Well, off we go."

"Hey, Nik?  I'm actually pretty sure I saw--"  Peggy's warning was cut off at the sound of snapping twigs and more dark movement cutting through the scattered rays of sunlight.  Nik tensed at the sight, quickly glancing back at his companion.  They both knew what was on the other's mind: bear.

The mail carriers were instantly nervous at the prospect of either running from or facing off a bear with two less familiar tokotas.  They'd agreed to exercise and watch the yetis for the day, but they had no idea how skillful Tate and Spud were when it came to hunting.  They weren't at all willing to take the risk of engaging in a fight.

"Can we pick up the pace?" Nik hissed.

"Gladly," Peggy replied.

They set their tokotas trotting briskly through the trees, becoming more and more tense as flashes kept following them.  Eventually, Peggy was able to make out an actual shape weaving through the rays of sun.  It was definitely a large predator, with black fur and piercing, reflective eyes.  She tried not to feel afraid as their trot picked up to a canter, but Spud and Tate had also taken notice of their pursuer.  They'd already let out a few growls of nervous warning.

Finally, after they'd almost broken into a full gallop, the break of the trees appeared before them.  Peggy and Nik sighed audibly in relief as they hurried toward freedom, but let out audible yelps of alarm when a black shape suddenly stepped from the forest to stand in their path.  The two shielded their faces in startled fear.  There were a few moments of silence before they noticed their tokotas wagging their tails in friendly greeting.  They looked at each other in confusion, then turned forward to get a better look at the "predator."

"Wait...Nanook?"  Nik hopped from Tate's back to approach the black and silver tokota.  He watched them calmly, his tail hanging non-threateningly and his icy eyes questioning.  The man laughed in relief and said, "Geez it's good to see you, we honestly thought you were a bear!"

Peggy let out her tension in a hard exhale, then followed the man to stand next to the dominant tokota.  As she pulled up next to him, he sniffed gently at her, quiet concern in his expression.  She smiled at him and said, "I'm pretty sure he was just trying to help us get out of the woods."

Nik gave the tokota a fond pat and grinned.  "I wouldn't put it past him.  Thanks, sir, us silly humans really appreciate the help." (1102 words)
